I'd just like to say that I agree pretty much with everything Pete has said here.

Being more of a high volume (L4D) / Twitch shooter (UT3) kinda guy, I'd just ignored the more recent Splinter Cells. Although I did play the first and enjoy it, I got bored of the second before I'd gotten too far into it.

This is a refreshing change for me, and I'm very much enjoying it so far. The stealth controls came to me quite easily and although I've not got fully the hang of escaping from firefights yet (I tend to just crouch and fight my way out or, more accurately, die) it's all done very well.

A few of the sections are largely just cut-scenes though, such as the bathroom interrogation scene in Pete's screenshot. Again, not a bad thing as it does cool down after some of the squeaky-bum intensity.

I've just got to mention the presentation and graphics though, just wow! I'm running a "nothing special anymore" video card in 1600x900 in medium detail and it's just amazing. The layering of objectives over the scenery is so neat (bottom screenie), and they can move too. Just beautiful.
