I have no specific model in mind, but I'd always recommend Netgear or Linksys for home routers. Both are solid and pretty easy to use.
Most cable routers simply hang off the back of the cable modem that Virgin will have given you - so act as another layer which is easy to share rather than replacing your existing one.
Edit: FYI I use a Netgear DG834PN ADSL2+ router.

Have spent a fair bit on a router in the past, 100+ or so, but that was specifically for a router that could handle multi-NAT (multiple external IPs) and decent QoS. Looks like that one's so expensive for having some decent processing power behind it, if it can handle all that it says it can!
But I second Tal's recommendation, got some sorta wireless Netgear box here, too.

If the router you have works ok, you could always just buy a 4 or 8 port switch. Should be able to get one for 10-20 quids.

He'll need NAT and portforwarding for gaming though Flash. Switch won't do the job...

Yea, as I understand it he's using a regular cable modem, not yet a router.
