Do We Need A New Game?

I personally think a new game would be pretty damn nice around now.

As much as I enjoy Left 4 Dead 2 I think a break would be nice whilst we wait for the DLC to be released.

I posted on a popular gaming forum asking for alternatives to L4D2 and told that what the requirements were.... read it here:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.188164-Alternatives-titles-To-Left-4-Dead-2s-Versus-Mode

Maybe those of you who've never played WoW could try the 10 trial and we'd group up as a posse and go questing.
(The trial is only 40 meg or so. It downloads what's needed as it's needed without interrupting gameplay. Clever stuff.)

I doubt this will be a popular choice but I honestly can't think of any alternatives at the moment.

Post your thoughts and idea's for new fun and frolics.

That Battlefield: Bad Company 2 seems to be popular with a lot of the people on my list. There's a 4v4 squad mode, as well as squad deathmatch, and some more standard Battlefield stuff. They took out or toned down the majority of the vehicles, for anyone who can remember being spawn-raped by Blackhawks and various other technical crud from BF2.

Haven't played it myself, since we barely scrape minimum specs. And of course, no zombies! Big Grin

Something to bear in mind is that not everyone will be willing to shell out the cash for a game that might only last us two or three weeks at best. We've been caught out by the rush to a new game which only half of us played and then abandoned shortly afterwards. I have no massive desire to go that route again.

I do wonder if there isn't merit to trying to regularly pick up some of the older titles that we've played - especially when we have all of the infrastructure in place already (for example - our server can handle any Steam game without a problem).

We've had the occasional run out with CS, DoD etc. Call of Duty 4 is still a blast. Arma is a game that I'd like us to give a fair crack of the whip to (and we can play it free via the demo).

Hell - even a re-look at something like Battlefield 1942 (which we talked about a lot down in London) or Battlefield 2 - both awesome games.

Certainly been down that route with the 'rades as well, wondering whether to buy a game that will last a weekend (that was also kinda my Left 4 Dead experience!)

I'd be well up for giving Natural Selection a bash, given as it's essentially free. Aside from that I'm always game for a crack at CSS/DoDS or anything from that big THQ pack that was on offer over Christmas.

The MW2 demo did at least persuade me that our system can handle the game with no/low graphics options) but it's still an expensive shell out for the game, and the others are rather on with BC2 (which as pointed out has no demo, and probably wouldn't run well anyway).

UT3 is a good choice.

FileShack and Gamershell have the demo. (741 meg)

Download from Fileshack
Download from Gamershell

I'll check out GameStation tomorrow for prices and take the demo to Gaz's on my USB stick.

EDIT: If you install this then it'll give you an error about a "modified executable file". After a bit of nosing through Google it turns out that the only "fix" is to set your PC clock to 2008.

Do outside scum like myself get vetoes? Presumably not, but I'd vote against TF2 if I could. That very much was our game for pretty much the last two years, the one that everyone had and nearly everyone played, but somehow it turned crap over the last few updates. The various sparkly and shiny things they added just reduce your FPS rate, and the extra weapons they added just had the opposite effect they were supposed to for the most part.

The UT3 idea sounds very good though, might try out the demo later but I assume it should run fine, had a lot of fun with some of the earlier ones. How does the online auth system work? If I buy second hand will I risk that the former owner is still playing the darn thing?

Gaz is downloading his UT3 Black now (35 minutes to go) and I'll download mine when I get home.

Chez, feel free to join in! The more the merrier. Especially in the likes of UT.

So we're clear: Opinion, yes. It's a public forum after all and it's not like we don't know you. Veto, no.

Gav (Cannonfodder) has been extolling the virtues of UT3 for a while now. I might have a look to see if I can grab a demo.

Demo is out there (previous page) if you're willing to stick your OS clock to 2008.
