I have just now discovered a small lightweight freeware app that you can use to draw in 3d.
Check it out and play some, you should be able to get some fun things out of it.

What type of modelling does the program focus on?
Sub-D modelling? (Common in XSI|Softimage) Vertex modelling? (Common in 3D Studio Max.)
A mix of the 2 (like in Google's Sketchup + Blender)?
Can we export to other programs like the Source engine?
Did you draw that fish thingy?

"And so is the Golden City blackened With each step you take in my Hall. Marvel at perfection, for it is fleeting. You have brought Sin to Heaven And doom upon all the world."

I can only answer one question of those that you have asked.
-"No I didnt make the fishy looking creature."
I do know ppl use it with both imports and exports of several formats.
Check their forum for more info.
