RIP PC Zone 1993-2010

Apparently, next month's will be the last. Back in the day I was subscribed to arch-rival PC Gamer for a few years, but did pick up Zone on occasion. I guess most gamers these days would ask "What's PC Zone? Are they on Twitter?"

A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

I've been a subscriber to PC Zone for last 10 years, i'm a bit surprised at this news as i always thought it was a popular mag. Oh well guess i'll find something else to spend my pennies on. Sad

PC Gamer still going I think, although I'll assume that if you actually wanted to read that, you would have subscribed to it in the first place.

Poor old Charlie Brooker.

I dunno who Charlie Brooker is (does he not write for the Telegraph?)

Apparently he wrote for PC Zone during the 90s, and now for the Guardian amongst other things. Which really makes him neither poor, nor old.

But yeah, I'd be curious to see their sales figures over the years and how much impact the Internet has had. All print media's had to take a hit, newspapers, magazines and presumably to some extent books as well, but obviously those on the edge get hit the worst. I remember someone from Finland telling me about a pricing war the newspapers had after one of the firms offered their news up for free on the Net. Not sure what came out of it, but I don't think they all survived!

I do get PC Gamer from time to time, espec if there's an article thats of interest to me, might change my subscription over to it if they've any of those nice gaming mice as a freebie. At the moment the offer of a 'World of Warcraft Board Game' not exactly making me dash to the phone.

Have you not heard anything from PC Zone yet, then?

No, but as the opening item said, there may be one more issue before it dies. I shall keep an eye out on the direct debit side.

Nice post (embryonic diatribe?) from the Brainy Gamer about macho American gaming magazine covers, but also mentions the generally deplorable state of magazine sales.
