EA are learning from games that use micro-transactions (such as Company of Heroes) and the next Battlefield game will be free to play.
The release date is simply "Spring 2011" but kotaku have a little more info, a video and some screenshots.

Battlefield Heroes was quite fun for a freebie, though it pretty much required you to pay for weapons if you wanted to enjoy the experience and not get outgunned in every encounter. Have THQ released figures as to how much they're earning from CoHO?
Personally I think I prefer paying for my games up front rather than making do with some basically cut-down package for free. Company of Heroes Online is great fun, but it's basically the same game as Company of Heroes was 4 year ago, without the extra depth added to it by the expansion packs.
