Inception

Went to see Inception over the weekend. In short, bloody good film - although a bit complex at times. (Don't want to ruin it for anyone, but by the end I was losing track of exactly what was going on!)

It draws obvious inspiration from the Matrix trilogy and the protaganists abililty to influence their 'virtual world' (subbing 'dream world' in this case), but is excellently done and probably the most original film I've seen in ages.

Been some talk about that film over here at the moment. And just read a really awesome review comparing it somewhat to a gaming tutorial gone wrong over at Gamer Melodico, worth a read, very well written (the post and the blog in general).

I hadn't realised he was the same fella responsible for Memento and The Prestige though. Definitely more interested in taking a look now!

Had the pleasure of seeing this with Tal and our lovely wives, totally agree - best thing I've seen in some time and I hope it raises the bar as regards what the studios do with their money (add a bit of thought and intelligence).

The effects were brilliant and acting pretty good too (that kid who was in Third Rock was amazing). Have since heard a lot of the effects in the film were mechanical, rather than CGI (which does make a difference - a lot of the zero grav hallways were done by rotating stages for example).

Certainly the most I've discussed a film afterwards with anyone, and great to get everyone else's take on it. Do yourself a favour and avoid the trailers if you've not already, take it in blank.
I think I've actually enjoyed it more afterwards than I did at the time (don't know why that makes sense?). Probly gonna see it again.

Personally, didn't hugely enjoy Memento (it wasn't bad or anything, just didn't float my particular boat) but TDK was brilliance.

Inception

Just got back from seeing said movie.

Here be spoilers (Sort of.)
The final seconds of the movie made me grin, suppress a laugh of joy and at the same time I wanted to scream "Argh you bastards!" at the imaginary directors sitting somewhere in the audience mocking me.

I exited the theatre with my mate in silence and managed to mutter:
"It wavered at the end..... didn't it? I'm sure I saw it wobble!"

He agreed and that was enough for my imagination to do the rest and cement a happy ending.

All in all... I really enjoyed it. It's rare (in these parts) for the audience to do anything other than laugh together... but during the final scene, when the camera did it's reveal by panning to the right... there was a collective "aww" of sympathy, understanding and relief from them... from us.

At that point, I knew a Blu-Ray purchase would be inevitable.

And finally...

If this film had been less than 2 hours, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. There was too much to be explained, set-up and played-out.

Showing the van's progress every few minutes was genius.

Superb movie. 9.7/10
