Just to add to Pete's Pete's article, if you want to play add ons you will need to download the 350mb L4D2 addon support module which can be found in the 'Tools' section of the Steam GUI.
If you don't install this, you don't get to play additional content - including the inevitable conversion of the original L4D maps which I'm very keen to play in L4D2.
